I've always passed on these jobs. Using a surface cleaner can scar the black top and it grows back faster. Looking for a good method with softwashing. Softwash and rinse with a booster pump? Make a return trip a month later?
You could use a surface cleaner I suppose if you put some more gentle tips on it...
I would think that if you killed it with a softwash that it would wash away over time just like on a roof. It falls back to the ever elusive instant gratification.

I guess my biggest question is how to define blacktop, here?
Is it just black concrete or actual asphalt, in which case why not try one half percent mix in a small test area and go from there ;)...
We do not have any (ok maybe 1 or 2) concrete driveways up here so we run into moss on asphalt all the time. Keep in mind it's an up sell but we will spray the asphalt with roof mix and after all the work is done on the rest of the house we will either rinse it off, pressure wash it gently or just leave it up to mother nature. The customer will need to make the decision. Very rarely do we run into a driveway that has been cared for and seal coated often that has moss.
