How to read spray tips?

I've been reading a lot of the posts about the various sizes/patterns of recommended spray tips.  I'm confused on exactly how to read the numbers now.

On some posts it appears the first two numbers are the orifice size and the last two are that pattern degree.

On other posts it seems to be the opposite.

          Which one is correct?

I'm looking to try some brass nozzles for a better fan pattern.   I'm seeing both 4030's and 3040's.  Which of the two would be the 40 orifice and 30 degree fan?

Also, if anyone is using the Delevan Fatboy with Accumulator, do you know if you can use 30 and 20 orifice tips without blowing the fuse?

Thanks guys!

There is no 30° spray pattern readily available. The numbers are always spray pattern - orifice size. If someone writes 4030, they're doing it wrong.

With an accumulator, you can run a nozzle as small as you want, because you're using what the tank supplies you, not the pump. In actuality, the smaller the nozzle, the longer the pump stays off until the tank runs low.

Cool beans, thanks Russ!

I'm wondering if I had a problem with my old accumulator or if it's with the pressure switch. I'll have to check the size of my "power washer" soap tip to see exactly what that is, but when I did use it a couple of times trying to use less product, I've blown my 15 amp fuse on two different occasions. I'll get back to you on what size tip it was. (I have a 4gpm pump)

We have gone over to using the 50 gallon mix tank on the SWS Cradle Skids as out Accumilator tank and using the Green Wash Injection to mix in the chems. Our pumps run continously either spraying or mixing the tank keeping the bleach and water in soloution. So we use 20 oriface tips.
