Repairing leaks in roof / holes from roof anchor
Permalink

I was hoping that someone can tell me the product that they use to repair / fill-in the holes from attaching a roof anchor.  My sister has a slight leak on her metal roof, and I thought that she could use that adhesive / caulk to repair the leak.

Thanks,

Jeff,

we use a black jack type asphalt based mastic for asphalt based roof systems. That will not work on metal. The metal will get too hot and the oils will start to flow down the roof. On metal roof leaks you can use specific sealants like Tremco polyurethanes or similar, made by Geocell. You can also buy them in colors to match the roof color. butyl based cailks also work on metal, but I prefer Tremcos products.

Just as important Jeff is to clean and prep the surface really well before applying any sealant. Also understand that caulkings/sealants should never be the primary waterproofer and if they are, just be prepared that ongoing maint. will be necessary. Butyl or polyurethane based caulkings only way to go.

Thanks guys.  This is for a repair to a leaking roof.   She is not applying it, but wanted to know the right solution.

Jeff, we use a polyurethane caulking on shingle roofs called NP1. We have great success with this product, which also bonds well to CLEAN metal surfaces. We also use a generic brand of gutter seal on some metals.
