Below are pics of a garage roof we cleaned Friday. My question is ....Why is the 19 yr old roof on the main house not dirty but the 9 yr old roof on the garage is so dirty? The front of the house faces the east and the oak tree in the back is about 15ft away from the garage. Any input would be great.

Kristofer:
This is totally my own opinion, and not backed up by scientifc facts:
Its one of the reasons this field is so hard to research of provide concrete answers, algae grows in some places and doesn't in others. Compare it to a loaf of moldy break or a petri dish...some lives will be covered, other won't. Shingle compositions change from Mfg from year to year, weather, changes...all these variables make finding hard, proven answers almost impossible.

My guess, about that time ago (9years) there were a lot of batches of bad shingles. I actually had a warranty claim myself with CertainTeed on my own first home.

Chad.....I think you hit the point of the shingles being different ages and made with different compounds. My bet is the older shingle was made without a filler the GM are attracted to. My bet is also that if there were a scientific study done on the two shingle there would be more proof of GM attacking the filler.

The finished roofs look great!
AC said at Softwashapalooza that older shingles had lead in them, and GM doesn't like lead. I don't know the year they quit putting it shingles, but it may have still been in them 19 years ago...
9 years ago were all the hurricanes. 3M ran out of the fungal resistant gradual. Most fungal resistant shingles that were sold and packaged as fungal resistant in fact had no 3M gradual in them. The shingle manufacturers rolled the dice because someone needed to keep making shingles to keep up with the historic demand.

AC...thats what i was thinking but just wanted to see if anyone else has seen this problem elsewhere.
Christopher....i used 3% augmenting method, 1 coat and a couple of touch ups on the hard spots.
Kristofer
How is augmenting working out for you?
AC
AC....It is working out great.....much more cost effective for my area. Dont really like the white residue that is left after the cleaning but i do let the customer know what to expect and that it will rinse off with 2-3 HARD rains. Due to it being so hot here in central Florida it has helped with the plants...i have only had 2 burned plants in the last month which were under a valley (no gutters).
