I ran into a guy here in Florida using acid to clean rust on the walks in front of a shopping center last month. I told him he was wasting his time and needed to use F9 Barq and gave him my card so he could e-mail me for the info. I sent him your way Craig.
Hi Craig; We got our case of F9 and now we are waiting for a couple days of decent weather to experiment with rust removal
I have a customer who has a beautiful slate roof that is bleeding iron ore stains. Will this clean that up?
I have a couple pieces of the slate to work with at the shop, so we are going to do a test with it soon.
I also see some of the guys have been using it on asphalt shingles. Any particular instructions for shingles?
Steve,
It sounds like the slate may contain pyrite. This crystals are fairly common and unfavorable due to their ability to form rusty stains. F9 should be diluted with a minimum of 1/3 to 1/2 gallon of water and will remove the exterior rusty stains. However, any rust that is inside the rock may still be visible and will return.
Take a look at our videos on front9restoration.com under "f9 University." Or just click on the link you want to view below:
Also, check for any crystals in the barc bottle. These are common from shipping through the colder states and can easily be dissolved back into solution: How to dissolve the crystals in a BARC bottle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZVaqRTEs8A
I'd recommend warm water if you can so they will dissolve more quickly.
For Shingles, we dilute F9 with 1/2 gallon of water. Spray a light mist on and watch them dissappear. Like here: How to remove rust stains on stucco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x96YA4chx2M

Steve, mix 3 parts water 1 part BARC. Spray on the shingles and watch the rust disappear. Rinse when rust is gone. Use same procedures for around or on glass too.

Thanks Doug. You are rocking F9 down in Houston.. nice job.
Steve- Doug has been using F9 for several months now. He is finding ways to cut back on product and still get the job done with beautiful results!
Guys Thanks for the advice We are waiting for dry warmer weather this week to try some areas. Craig I think you are right about the slate having pyrite.
We are going to experiment and if the results are what we think they will be, we will just have to settle for periodic maintenance cycle on the thousands of feet of slate roof...
Hey somebody has to do it
Doug, as usual you are out front leading the way in teaching techniques.. Thanks a million
