To foam or not to foam? Softwash Foamer?
Permalink

I got some roof snot coming to me soon. I'm hoping this will slow my mix down when I have to shoot from the ladders edge. How many here have used a foamer for roof wash and what success have you had with it? And does anyone know if there is a low pressure(softwash) or direct pump version of as foamer or do I have to use a pressure washer to use a foamer?

I purchased an A-25 airless foam wand from Lafferty Systems. It works okay with my FatBoy Bandit. Not sure how it would be with the SWS skid, probably better. For my system I may need to add Roof Snot in addition to GW to get a foam that would hang good on vinyl fencing or a 12/12 pitch.

The A-25 airless foam wand is designed for low pressure systems.  I had them put a 1/4 in male QC on it so I can use it interchangeably with my 4-Banger.

I have been specking out the best way to create foam over the past year.

We use a CAFS system in the fire service to create foam. Compressed Air

Foam System. I have found the ideal components to build a small CAFS system.

I just need to spend time on prototype.

To create a "Good" foam you need the following:

* A foam concentrate

* An inductor/injector

* Mechanical agitation (air)

The problem with an induction type system is the inducor needs to match the

nozzle and it will create a foam good enough for roof cleaning, but it will not

spray a thick foam high enough to wash the walls of a two story home.

I have been looking because I want to pull up to a house wash, foam it "great

attention grabber" and rinse. A foam blanket will help keep the chems on the wall

longer in the hot sun as well.

Gotta run, there is a deer in the woods with my name on it.

AC, is there any problem adding Roof Snot ( ammonyx lo or ammonyx M) to the greenwash mix to try to generate more foaming action with my A-25?  Don't want to cause some sort of cynergism!!  bleh

Here is a video foaming a vertical surface.

Link Here

I am not recommending the company in the video, just showing

the concept for foaming vertical surfaces. Now imagine foaming

an entire house for a house wash. You would get EVERYONES attention

in the neighborhood.

 I cant speak specifically to the chemestry or toxic of mixing the two....though NO issues have been had. However I can not make Green Wash FOAM much because of keeping it biodegradable in nature. If you need the FOAM and cling I would bless Russ with the business.

1. Because he is a GOOD guy.
2. Because the reviews of Roof Snot of other reputable people has been very good.

I ordered some from the good man yesterday.  I'd like to try it on brick walls to really get some "hang-time" and eat away at the black GC.

Just so you know, I do get a bit more foam generation with the A-25 using just the Green Wash.

Hey, just to update:

When adding "Roof Snot" to my regular mix of SH/GW and using my Lafferty A-25 airless foaming wand, I was able to produce an awesome blanket of foam on a 12/12 pitch roof!!!!  LOVED IT.  smile

I was able to lob foam at least 15 ft up the roof from the gutter line!  Tremendous hang-time and great results.  I'll try to take some pics next time I get a chance or maybe even some video and post them if y'all are interested.

Hello,

Could you let me know how long the Roof Snot "foam" actually remains visible on the roof once applied?  I am thinking of adding to my augmented CH/ SH/GW  mix and trying Roof Snot to minimize run off.

Will this work using a SWS setup or do you need a airless foamer?

Thanks in advance

V/R Jeff

 Jeff,

As we are teaching proper spraying techniques around the US we are seeing many pros applying TOO MUCH chemical to the roofs. If you are using correct application techniques there should be little or no run-off from the roof. A foaming surfactant should not be needed.

We occasionally use roof snot. Only on approx. 12/12 or greater pitch. 2 cups per 50 gallon mix works fine.

AC & Tim, Thanks for the replies and helpful info. It was more of a "what else can I add to the tool bag" question and gleaming from the experts after reading previous posts. I am always honing the techniques as learned and applying them the best I can.

No major run off issues yet "knock on wood".

Again thanks to all !!

If you start doing some cedar roofs, get a booster pump and use for rinsing. You will speed up jobs alot, and will be able to keep up with spraying and not waiting for the rinse

 Very good to know!  I have a 12/12 (north/south) and 10/12 (east/west) pitched roof cleaning that a customer accepted my quote on today.  The roof has almost no gutters on most of the house and the roof is just a plethora of metal flashing valley's.

Will Roof Snot leave any residue on the roof after spraying?  Assuming if it does leave residue it will wash away with the first decent rain?

Yes should rinse away after a good rain.
