Oxalic acid works great. I just did a roof the other day that had rust from the chimney capping all the way down the roof. I had some left over One Restore in a pump up sprayer that I used to remove that. It worked very well. One restore is a blend of acids and works well, but it is expensive. I only used it because it was already in the pump sprayer.

I use a mixture of phosphoric acid and a little muratic acid.
Depending on the severity of the stains I use 85% phosphoric acid and 15% muratic acid if it is really rusty.
Cut down with water if necessary.
Nice to see you resurface Sully. I read a post from you about a gutter cleaning mixture and I will try it this week. F13 has been my go to product, but I would love to find something I can mix up myself to do the same job.

Oxolic Acid is what I use but rarely face rust on roofs.
I love that stuff that was mentioned the clear pink stuff. I used it on a hoa pvc fence project a few months ago. My old supplier (action pressure systems) that went out of biz after 37 years in Tampa started carrying it in there last months.
Be carefull with the pink stuff it has HF in it.
Also FWIW, Oxolic binds to calcium aggressively and will give you kidney stones.

I have a job on vinyl siding this weekend. It is rusted because the home owner uses well water to water his yard, looks like repeat business. Has anyony used Iron Out from Lowes, planning on doing a test tonight.
I have an apartment complex that I was awarded, I started the roof cleaning (one building, so far) but each building has 12 chimneys that the caps are rusting and staining the shingles. I have oxaclic acid that I plan on trying out, these are pretty deep stains. Does 8oz per gallon sound right for this application or does someone have a better recommendation or solution. This may be the deal breaker on the rest of the 26 buildings so I'm trying to keep the cost down to a minimum and hoping to wind up looking like the hero. I start tomorrowon the chimneys!!!

Barry,
Rusting metal is different from iron oar rust in irrigation water. You will most likely not be able to do much with these stains. Sorry for the bad news.

AC
Maybe it worked out for the best then AC, I could do without the kidney stones again.
I guess I'll show up to make the effort and if it doesn't work I'll give them a price on replacing the bad shingles. I left it as, I'll do my best on the rust stains but did not guarantee that part of the job. This is my first biggest account and was hoping to make a great impression, at least the black streaks are gone.
