pretty much Steve....copper is a biostatic metal, which basically means bacteria and molds do not grow on it. the run off also creates some copper sulfides and halides, which produce a form of salt and a form of chlorine.

As John and Steve already said, it's the copper. The shingle industry will add copper and zinc flecks to the granules, and then call their shingles "fungus resistant". It works SOMETIMES! Thanks for the classroom question, Mario.

With all due respect to the Frank LLoyd Wright student- this gutter design looks nice but long term its functionality is a disaster. Most times these are used in combination with an enclosed soffit underneath (i.e. no exposed eave). So, when the gutter system fails (seams) , water is trapped inside the soffit. Bad news. Also most times these gutters are set above the exterior wall plate causing some of the leaks to enter the home too. Then the lawyers get involved............... : )

I was thinking zinc or copper before I even opened the picture, but I'm making note of the impressive verbiage used to say so. :0)

No need to mention the clean extra shingles in the shed for comparison to see the difference in clean versus dirty...you just couldn't ask for a better example to show the homeowner just how dirty their roof really is and what it would look like when you are done with your cleaning!

For you more experienced folks, the Algae Resistant shingles...in the fine print, how long is the actual warranty for the copper keeping the roof clean from these organic infestations? I read somewhere that at least one company only really warrantied the roof from infestations on their AR shingles for 1 year..?
