Hello, we are cleaning an asbestos roof tomorrow that has heavy algae/moss on it. My question is should i be concern with agitating the moss with a broom prior to applying the application? I know in most cases we just spray and let mother nature rinse it off but the home owner got a letter from the insurance company saying clean it or replace it. Thanks
I would treat the roof let it dwell then agitate during initial rinse. Retreat problem spots and repeat process as needed. Asbestos wet is fairly safe, asbestos dry is not... Also be aware asbestos fibers may break free as you are brooming when wet. As you rinse the roof they will be rinsed away. Be cautious because if they deposit say under a air handler unit they could be sucked in and pulled into the home. You get what I am saying...
But I'm not an expert, that is just how I would handle it

Dwayne, we treat roofs up here in the NW all the time for insurance companies - who demand it be cleaned ASAP, and typically expect immediate results. After we are finished spraying, there is a lot of dead moss on the roof, and sometimes the adjuster/inspector comes out and comments that the roof moss is still on there.
So I proactively give the insurance company and homeowner a copy of a "Moss Removal Bulletin" that I have written & prepared, that educates the insurance company that this is the only way to safely clean the roof, without voiding the roof warranty. I also use this bulletin for HOAs when the HOA demands a homeowner clean their roof. Typically, when the board sees that my way is the safest way to clean the roof without voiding the warranty, they contact me and ask for estimates on other homes.
I'm happy to email you my format and you can change it as you see fit. I'd personally adjust the wording for the asbestos shingles, commenting that manually removing the moss/algae from it can cause environmental issues, and the only way to safely clean these roofs is to spray and let mother nature take care of the rest.
As AC said - DON'T AGITATE THE ROOF!

Could you email me a copy or post it at the authorized section. Tim@VestaWash.com We have one market area in a more working class neighborhood that wants the most bang for their buck, so I would like to leave it behind for the real mossy job quotes.
Click on the persons name you want to message, and that takes you to their profile page.
In the left hand column, you will see the 3 P's: Profile, Posts and Private Messaging.
Under Private Messaging click on "Send Message."
It's a good system. The board will tell you that you have a message when it says "Private Message" under the "Logged in as" box on the right hand side close to the top (near the banner)
Hope this helps, I'm almost confusing myself, LOL.
