another window washer in my area is doing roof shampooing. they say they use the most effective method to remove dark and ugly stains on roofs. and its eco friendly and uses no bleach and I think they put a machine on the roof. I want to know is how softwashing is better and what to tell people what the difference is. thank you

Tell them your not damaging their roof with a concrete cleaning machine. Also your not using a degreaser like shampoo does and your way dosent break down the asphalt in the shingle. And that your just better. nana nana boo boo we are better than roof shampoopoo. LOL. that was for all the tosh.0 watchers.

If your customers are on well water, they may quickly over power the well with the amount of water being pulled by the pressure washer hooked to the round machine. We just went back and fixed one of their jobs from last year. The homeowner said it pulled a lot of sediment, clogging filters and just created hassles. The homeowners wont know they are getting quoted by someone with a pressure washer. Tell homeowner to watch out for the buzz word "low pressure" rinse. It means they use a surface cleaner hooked to a pressure washer. They usually have a 2 year warranty and often push yearly maintenance treatments.
I have run in to this guy and bid jobs against him, if it's the guy on the east side in Sun Prairie. If you have a customer that really wants to know the difference have them call me if you'd like. I won't sell them on my service instead, but would consult with them as a "third party expert." I do both SoftWashing and pressure washing.
Yes, that thing they call a "low pressure sprinkle disk" is actually a surface cleaner. This hooks to a minimum 4.5 GPM pressure washer, like the big skids, not the things you can buy at Home Depot. These usually run about 3500psi. Divide that by the two rotating arms, account for some friction loss, and you will probably have somewhere around 1300-1500psi coming out of each nozzle, which sits about an inch and a half from the surface of the roof.
The "roof cleaner" is a product sold by Mosmatic, in Bristol, WI. They make high pressure swivels, and concrete surface cleaners. I have their swivels on all 6 of my surface cleaners. I just got off the phone with Mosmatic, after looking up the surface cleaner on their website. The roof cleaner is under the tab "high pressure." They don't make anything low pressure. They said a minimum of about 2000psi is needed to run the machine. It is also rated for a hot water pressure washer, so a guy could actually run 200 degree water from a hot water pressure washer through it, so high pressure and heat could be applied.
This is all bad stuff, but I wouldn't worry about this guy too much. He is a one guy and a truck operation. I know for a fact he pulled his ad out of one publication because he was "too busy." Anyone who stops advertising instead of hiring help and growing their company when they get busy is not a threat.
I would appreciate NOT telling them to look out for "low pressure rinse" though. We do lots of siding up here and "low pressure rinse" is exactly what we do on siding. It is on every proposal I do for siding. The important differentiation is that SoftWashing does not rinse on ROOFS.
Again, if you have a specific customer that you need to convince that SoftWashing is better, have them call me. I won't steal them, but I would be happy to steer anyone I can away from Roof Shampoo.

I would simply show customer a YouTube video of the RS talking place. (There's lots of them out there). If that doesn't scare the customer off, the nothing will!

Yea, Ray is right. Try to find the one with the guy with cut off jeans and no sleeves, and the pressure washer screaming right next to the camera. He almost falls off the roof like 3 times.

The roof devil site is kinda creepy. Cracked tooth and all. Makes me think a convict is coming out to service my home. Some people refuse to call a professional branding consultant.
No worries Lee. The roof devils company is based out of Easton. They were marketing roof shampoo services there a couple years ago. It didn't work out well for them so it looks like they started targeting the beach now.

Just picked up this last week. I'm gonna have a handle made for it, so I can use it on concrete like it was designed for. And incase anyone was wondering, the surface cleaner was equipped with 2 1504 tips for roof cleaning.

Yeah I was immediately turned off by the giant devil on the homepage ( as im sure some homeowners will be too). He has bid against me on job at a much lower price, which I still won.. What gets me though is they only go for the easy flat roofs because the roof is either too steep or the dormers are in the way for the surface cleaner to reach... Look at some of the pics of the "after" shots and there are still dirty parts?
I was looking at some images online and came across this image that I wanted to share of Ruuf Shampoo professionals at work. He doesn't say he is that sham-poo company (heavy on the SHAM), but he uses the same equipment and scare tactics. This isn't that devil guy, but a 5 star roof clean dot com. I'm sure several of you probably already know him. If you look close at his first image you'll see the striping where he was moving his 'gentle sprinkle disc' (that lie cracks me up every time) too quickly, even further up on the roof where he 'thinks' it is clean. There are several corners that he cannot get to using the disc as well, and it is easy to see the dirty side hasn't been cleaned by their solution at all.

Here is another where the worker is on an extremely steep pitch roof, so steep he is almost standing up straight and holding onto the peak. Not a good ad for personal safety since he isn't wearing any safety gear at all except shoes, but the Cougar Paws company would be proud.

And to beat it all, he has a yahoo.com e-mail address...the gold standard of professionalism we should all strive for with an 8 year old company! Not to mention the 1 year warranty, and that impressive $10 discount for seniors (wow, a whole $10? I can supersize my value meal!!!)
How are these guys not being sued in a class action suit for all the roof damage they have done?
Troy this company is out of nj and pa. I talked to the guy before ( about 3 yrs ago) I ask him does a power washer power the metal disc and his answer was yes. I also asked him if it knocks alot of granules off and his answer was " there's millions of granules up there what the difference if a couple 100,000 fall off". I told him good luck and I haven't ran into since.
Like Mike said, that guy is in the Philly area and Southern NJ. I see his van all the time when doing an estimate and I love competing with him. He is typically cheap on roofs that are straight forward, but once you add a decent amount of pitch and some dormers, he cannot compete. Also, they only offer roof washes and no house washes.

Wow, and this yahoo is still in business and has tons of good reviews from people that really just have no clue how much damage he is doing to their roof. It's laughable in one sense, but really sad in another that he is getting paid to destroy people's roofs. It amazes me that people still know about the ARMA warnings and continue to do business in this manner when it wouldn't take much to switch over to a Soft Washing system and do it properly. Obviously by that second photo I posted he has guys that have no fear of falling off a roof, even with lack of safety equipment.
What a bummer guys roof shapooooooo just hit Hawaii also they are advertising all over the radio and tv. What a joke. But I hope that creates more business for me once I can educate the customers that the correct process is Softwashing only.
Well, hopefully their roof cleaning advertisements will land you more work as well just from him making people more aware of the problems these stains can cause. You may even want to buddy up with this guy so he has a 'friend' that he can pass jobs off to that Roof Shampoo just isn't equipped to handle, such as house washing etc., and there are roofs that just by their individual designs are not the best candidates for cleaning with a ~30 inch surface cleaner. I don't know if you are on Thumbtack.com or Pro.com or sites like this, but when I get requests for quotes I include the link to the ARMA technical bulletin and explain that Soft Washing is the professional level service that is stated in the ARMA bulletin for cleaning these stains off of roofs, and oh, yeah, by the way Mr. & Mrs. customer, make sure you read that bottom line under CAUTION about high pressure cleaning systems (aka, pressure washers).
The last I checked we didn't have any Roof Sham companies in our area because I was looking into this process early on (in two separate locations about 60 miles apart simultaneously). The woman was talking about how GREAT their roof cleaning solution was, how it required absolutely NO DWELL TIME before rinsing (Duh, I wonder why LOL), but as soon as I asked for a sample of their solution to do a side by side test against a bleach based cleaning solution, by some miracle BOTH locations I was looking at had supposedly been claimed by people that had been looking into the businesses in those two locations and I've never heard back from the woman since (I think her name was Sandra or Sandy?) That's all the validation I required and I've been on this site ever since. I have checked a few times on their online site to see if the two locations were still available, and every time, they still were available. If she is so scared to do a side by side comparison against a bleach based cleaner, that tells me how pitiful their cleaning solution really is. I just checked again and the only Roof Sham company is 90 miles from me in Fairfax, near Washington DC, and about 130 from the 2nd location I was looking at. That's my testimony on this Roof Shampoo process.
